But it was difficult.
Being antisocial meant she had a lot of hangups when it came to being cautionary. So...finding people she liked tended to be, um, hard.
She wanted to give Mal the benefit of the doubt, which was something she rarely gave. Words were sometimes hard to convey when speaking, after all she had that expression and monotone. Not many people, unless if they really knew her, would understand an actual change from the default. At least with written words, she could at least convey it a little better. If by "better", it meant second guessing was easier to do.
She didn't want to screw this up. She tried to not be reactionary, stay frank. She lived here for too long to throw in the towel so fast about this particular thing.]
It does a little. If I actually meet someone I end up not disliking right away.

Mal doesn't have a whole lot of friends - for obvious reasons - and with the way his life has been for the last several years he's not inclined to open up to anybody beyond to the very few people he can trust any time soon. Riye's not even close to the borders of his inner circle yet, but he'll freely admit she's the best company he's met here so far, sure.
So it's a little bit of a shame to have her turn her suspicions on him like this. He thought he could be free of that kind of atmosphere here. It's not like it's undeserved, but... damn it, why can't these little confrontations ever happen for the things he has screwed up instead of for things that didn't matter or didn't happen in the first place!?
He wonders just how much of the truth he should give her.]
Then I won't waste your time on any misplaced trust. I have just as much blood on my hands as anybody else who's been in a war zone and none of them got back up after.
[He'll let her make her own decision from there.]

Because Daria knew that, especially now. So many people here were from places that she couldn't even fathom in her home. It took her some time, but she really grew to understand how her little circle of morals just don't simply apply to everyone. Not that they were bad people, not really. Nor were they-...well, "privileged" was a gross word. It applied though. Privilege.
So, it all made sense. For here, and in her head when she thought about it.
It was a long ass five to ten minutes before she came up with her reply. A very serious one.
At least he gave an answer, which she appreciated. It took a lot of pain to have a lot of stuff get finally unveiled to her last time. Not that she wasn't to blame. But, again, she really couldn't justify judging that. That would make her a hypocrite.]
Then I won't waste your time by judging you. I know life isn't something people are given a good hand at and are told it's easy.
At least you have the guts to admit it. You don't have to defend your actions because you were given a crappy hand and had to deal with it. So far you haven't used it as an excuse either.

She extends an olive branch and he grabs the sharp end of a knife. The irony of knowing that the situation he was in - that his entire world was in - was all because of his own cowardice kills him a little more by the day.
The better part of an hour passes before the little spirit messenger finally passes on his response, which is far too short to excuse that kind of delay. But some words are harder to say than others. Even in writing.]
Thanks

People are not as alienated as you think.
Her mother said that to her, when Riye rattled with how she perceived sitations. Was she such an unrelenting, self righteous jerk who couldn't hold on to a friend?
Then her mother told her that Daria was right in which she stood for what she believed in because she felt they were right, that wasn't a character flaw. Believing in good wasn't a character flaw. But seeing how other people felt, and how they perceived things through their own experiences to survive in the real world...she had to understand.
So she sat, considered, did it pay off? Maybe. She sat there for that hour after being honest, and Mal somewhat coming clean without any real harshness.
Thanks. That was what she read. Nothing more, nothing less.
Accidents were a thing. But Mal didn't seem like a person who would lie about it. He didn't give a list of excuses, neither did he throw it at her face.
He was dismissive, sure. But she understood that more than he could imagine.
You're welcome.]
